A new sound system is being installed at Clacton’s Princes Theatre.

The Tendring Council-run theatre is currently using speakers thought to be about 20 years old, and after listening to customer feedback the theatre management the auditorium and Essex Hall needed a new, modern, high-quality sound system.

Work will begin on Tuesday and is due to be completed on Thursday, August 16, just in time for the Champions of Rock show the following day.

The £40,000 needed for the system and installation works has been funded entirely by the restoration fee charged on tickets – meaning the project has been paid for by theatregoers.

The fund has already been used to pay for new tiered seating in the theatre.

Mick Skeels, councillor responsible for leisure and tourism, said: “The Princes Theatre is one of the main attractions in Clacton and it’s so vital to keep its equipment up to date.

“We’re extremely grateful to everyone that comes and watches a show, because they are the ones that make sure we can keep the theatre open and top quality.

“After around 20 years with the old speaker system, it is about time for this refurbishment and the improvements are set to make the Princes Theatre ready for the next two decades.

“The new system will allow us to attract bigger and better shows and names, and also dramatically enhance other events such as weddings, receptions, boxing and private parties which are on the increase.”

The next project for the theatre will be the expansion and refurbishment of the toilets, starting with the ladies – is already being planned for 2019.
