ENGLAND fans declared the World Cup knockout curse over after the Three Lions' dramatic penalty shootout win over Colombia.

Midfielder Eric Dier slotted home the winning spot kick to confirm England's place in the last eight of the tournament.

The sides were stuck in a 1-1 deadlock following 90 minutes leading to a stunted spell of extra time which saw frustrations boil as neither side managed to clinch the deciding goal at Spartak Stadium in the Russian capital Moscow.

Overjoyed fans streamed out into Pier Avenue following England's victory, and danced in the street.

Ray Dowsett, managing director of the Flying Trade Group, which runs the pub, said there was an "amazing" atmosphere in the town for the game.

"I have been at Tom Peppers for 27 years and this was the best atmosphere we've ever had for an England match," he said.

"We've had good crowds for the past four or five games, even the friendlies - people have been waiting a long time for this.

"It was a great match and everyone enjoyed it in good spirits, there was no trouble at all."

England are now joint second favourites alongside France to win the tournament at just 4/1, according bookmakers Ladbrokes.
