LIFEGUARDS have issued a warning over the use of inflatables after they rescued three people within an hour from the sea off Clacton.

Clacton’s Beach Patrol went to the aid of a man who had capsized from an inflatable he was paddling on at about 2.30pm on Sunday.

The man, aged in his 30s, was spotted by beach patrol member John Hyatt, who kept him under observation while fellow patrolman Danny Ayling swam out to rescue the casualty.

Danny reached the man just as he went under the water and brought him safely to shore,.

He was given first aid and further safety advice after he declined further medical treatment.

The team was again called in to action at 3.10pm after being alerted by a member of the public to a body-boarder in difficulty to the east side of Clacton Pier.

He was clinging to a buoy, along with a friend who had swam out to try to help but also got into difficulty.

The beach patrol launched its jet ski and rescued the two men, bringing them to shore and giving safety advice.

Tendring Council, which runs the beach patrol, said the team was on hand across the district at the weekend to give advice and support to people using the coastline and to keep an eye on those enjoying the hot weather.

Mick Skeels, the council’s cabinet member for leisure and tourism, praised the efforts of the beach patrol.

“While we always hope for no incidents along our coastline, it is reassuring to know our beach patrol is on hand to help those who do get into difficulties,” he said.

“However, I would strongly urge people to think about their own safety in the first place, and to seek advice from the beach patrol if they are unsure about any aspects of the seafront.

“I would much rather our staff did not have to carry out any rescues.

“In particular, if you are using an inflatable or body board off our shoreline then be aware of your own capabilities and ability to swim, and also of the potential for currents and tides to carry you out to sea.

“You should stay as close to shore as you are comfortable with, and be aware of how quickly you can be taken beyond that point.”
