ANGRY councillors have called on a supermarket giant to take action to clear up litter that has been left covering trees and bushes surrounding Clacton’s Brook Country Park.

Rush Green ward councillor Mary Newton claims plastic wrapping is blowing into the park from bins in the delivery yard behind the Tesco at Brook Retail Park.

Mrs Newton and fellow Ukip councillors have carried out numerous litter picks in Britton Way, on one occasion last month picking up nine bags of rubbish from trees and bushes along a 200-metre stretch.

She said plastic wrapping from deliveries is left in uncovered bin cages and then blown by the wind into a copse of trees near London Road and into the country park opposite the store.

Rubbish has also been thrown from passing cars by customers of fast-food restaurants.

Mrs Newton said: “The problem is that there are no covers on the bins and the rubbish from packaging is picked up by the wind and is left covering the trees and under bushes.

“It either ends up in a copse of trees on Britton Way – or blows into the Brook Park Country Park across the road from the yard.

“The site is also opposite a holiday park and the rubbish is one of the first things tourists see when arriving in the town.

“We need to care for the environment, but we also need to keep Clacton clean to help with its regeneration. The plastic builds up quickly, despite regular litter picks being carried out.

“We have spoken to Tesco to point out the plastic and rubbish bordering the car park, but no action seems to have been taken.

“Litter picks are carried out in the car park, but they seem unable to stretch their litter pickers under the bushes just feet away from the parking spaces.”

A spokesman for Tesco said: “We’re disappointed to hear that litter is a problem near our Clacton superstore.

“We carry out daily cleans in our car park and are happy to continue discussions with our neighbours and council members to address the problem.”
