A VETERAN of the Women’s Royal Naval Service was the guest of honour at a special show at Clacton’s Princes Theatre.
Betty Garner, 94, was the guest of Tendring Council chairman Mark Platt at the performance of Land Of Hope And Glory.
Mrs Garner wrote to Mr Platt in response to his letter in the Gazette inviting ex-servicemen and women to get in touch to be kept up-to-date with veterans’ events.
She said she would love to attend the show, which is filled with old-time songs including favourites from the Second World War, but needed someone to push her wheelchair.
Mr Platt offered to push her wheelchair, and invited her to be his special guest.
Mrs Garner was presented with a bouquet of flowers and got to meet the cast in the chairman’s parlour after the performance.
Mr Platt said it was an honour to meet her.
“Betty is truly remarkable lady and it was fascinating to hear her reminisce about her time as a Wren,” he said.
“It made a spectacular show even more special, and I am delighted Betty took me up on my offer.”
