VOLUNTEER gardeners have been left devastated after vandals smashed plant containers at a train station.

The yobs caused damage at Alresford train station, in Station Road, on Sunday night.

Parish council chairman Frank Belgrove said a number of flower containers were smashed, fencing was broken and various items were thrown onto the railway line.

“They targeted all the plants that are growing in baskets around the station area,” he said.

“It is very sad as they are all planted and tended by volunteers.

“It is annoying to see the plants and things thrown on to the railway tracks.

“British Transport Police have been contacted and I hope the people responsible will be brought to justice.”

Mr Belgrove said CCTV of the area is being checked and that the transport police are taking the matter “very seriously”.

The station is looked after by volunteers and last year they won a prize for having most improved station in the East of England.

The damage took place between 12noon on Sunday and 7am on Monday.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is urged to call the police on 101.
