A BEAUTIFUL French bulldog puppy is recovering well in a foster home following a life-changing operation – thanks to big-hearted Gazette readers.

Ernie the French bulldog was handed over to the National Animal Welfare Trust, based in The Street, Little Clacton, because his owners could no longer cope with his disabilities.

After being examined by a vet, it was decided the poorly pooch needed operations on both of his back legs.

The first op has now taken place and is being hailed a success.

Following an appeal last month, the charity has thanked generous Gazette readers for donating enough money to pay the whopping £2,400 bill for both of the vital operations.

It is Ernie’s first birthday on Saturday and his foster carer is now awaiting a date for the second operation on the French bulldog’s other leg.

Lizzie Reffell, manager of the Clacton centre, said Ernie had a condition in his hind legs which caused him pain and reduced his mobility, which was very frustrating for a young dog who wanted to play.

She added: “He is recovering slowly at his foster home with a lovely couple who adore him.

“Ernie was sent for surgery on the day of their wedding, so we were all hoping it was a success.”

Be Kirkby, Ernie’s foster mum, said: “He is so sweet and affectionate but still is a cheeky puppy who loves to chew anything he can find.

“We have a large number of chew toys to keep him busy.

“Next Saturday will be his first birthday. We are so happy that at least one of his legs is now pain-free.

“It’s hard to imagine that he spent so much of his short life in pain.”

She added: “We are waiting to find out when his second leg surgery will be.

“I think he dreams of running on the beach and going for real walks.

“Hopefully this will be a reality in the next few months.”
