ONE of the biggest stars of Clacton Airshow makes a thrilling return to this summer’s spectacular after a year off.

The thunderous roar and astonishing aerobatics of the RAF Typhoon were missing from last year’s event.

But now the £125 million Eurofighter – one of the top highlights of recent airshows – is back on the bill.

The jet fighter, from 29 Squadron based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, is appearing on the first day of the show on August 23.

This year marks the centenary of both the end of the First World War and the formation of the Royal Air Force.

The Bremont Great War Display Team is appearing on both days of airshow.

It was formed in 1988 and was originally called the Wombats.

The original collection of replica aircraft included five SE5as, two Fokker Dr1s and a Fokker D7.

Many of them were flown by their builders and appeared that year at the Biggin Hill Airshow.

Over the years the aircraft and pilots have changed frequently.

The current line-up includes the Avro 504 biplane, Sopwith Triplane, Fokker Dr1 Triplane, Royal Aircraft Factory BE2c and SE5a, and a Junkers CL1.

Tendring Council leisure boss Mick Skeels said it was great to see the return of the Typhoon to Clacton.

He said: “The RAF Typhoon is an incredible display and one that never fails to leave the crowds in awe of its capabilities.

“I’m delighted that we have been able to secure the team’s participation on the first day of the event, which is now in its 27th year, and with the Bremont Great war display team it is shaping up to be another fantastic year for the Clacton Airshow.”

Further details of other flights, activities and attractions will be revealed over the coming weeks.
