A WEATHER watcher’s footage of lightning has gone down a storm as part of a new documentary about Britain’s wildest weather.

Shantelle Robinson has been hooked on weather since studying geography at school.

Footage of a ferocious lightning storm she captured earlier this year have featured in a Channel 4 documentary Britain’s Wildest Weather 2017, which was screened on Sunday.

The 22-year-old from Clacton said: “I was approached by producers who make the TV programme Britain’s Wildest Weather 2017 for Channel 4 back in June this year, after they spotted several pieces of weather footage on YouTube and via my Twitter.

“The footage of most interest to people will be my lightning shots, that was filmed in Chelmsford and Clacton on July 19.

“A huge mesoscale convective system – a complex array of thunderstorms larger than normal - moved up from France, during the early hours, clipped the edge of Kent and tracked through the eastern side of Essex.

“For filming the footage I use two GoPros mounted in my car and also a professional camera.

“My photos and footage have already made it onto the local and national news such as the BBC and ITV and also national and local newspapers, but never in a documentary actually about the weather, so it’s all quite exciting.”

Shantelle has completed a degree in physical geography degree at Southampton University and is working towards a masters in Applied Meteorology and Climatology at the University of Birmingham.

She also runs her own Clacton-based weather station and website and thanks to sponsorship from the Skyview weather company, she had a lightning detection system installed in June.

Shantelle’s footage can also be seen on her YouTube channel WeatherWatcherShanny and the documentary can we seen here.
