TOWN councillors say they are confident of taking over closure-threatened public toilets.

Frinton and Walton Town Council discussed the loos in Old Way, Frinton, at their last meeting.

The WCs are due to be closed by Tendring Council to save cash.

Town mayor Robert Bucke said he was hopeful the loos will be gifted to the council and public money could be spent upgrading and maintaining them.

He said: “It’s my belief that the toilets in Old Way will happen.

“I’m sure we will get there one way or another – they’re going to come to us.”

Other councillors said local council tax-payers’ money should not be spent on the toilets unless the town council owned them.

Frinton councillor Nick Turner said: “I’d be against us spending public money on something we didn’t own.

“I would not be happy if we got told to take them over and get on with it and we spent the money on it.”

The final fate of the loos is yet to be decided by Tendring Council.
