CHILDREN and young people with special educational needs and disabilities were invited to a family fun day on Clacton’s coast.

The afternoon was organised by Essex Short Breaks, Clubs and Activities service which encourages youngsters were encouraged to take part in a wide range of fun activities.

Disability4Sport and The J’s Hospice ran activities and interactive workshops at wheelchair-friendly beach huts on the promenade.

Families were also treated to special performances from the Mercury Theatre and CoCo Care Performing Arts.

County council families boss Dick Madden said the scheme  offers “fantastic opportunities” for young people.

He said: “After listening to young people and their families and hearing their suggestions for activities they would like to get involved with across the county, yesterday’s fun day was a great chance for them to experience what is on offer.

“Events like this also support our wider commitment to ensuring all children and young people in the county have equal access to the same opportunities and I’m so pleased everyone enjoyed the day.”

The event was introduced after Essex County Council approved funding for a newly-adapted caravan in Clacton, so families can enjoy short breaks with the right facilities.
