THE smooth sounds of city jazz will be taking centre stage at the Electric Palace.

The Tendring Thunderbirds will be performing their annual gig at 8pm on Thursday, September 14.

The group, which was born at the cinematic venue a decade ago, is led by the Electric Palace’s Chris Strachan on the trumpet.

The core personnel varies year to year and this year special guest and top trumpeter Paul Higgs will be joining them.

The band play a mix of Kansas City Swing, New Orleans Hot Jazz, Caribbean music and Chicago South-Side styles.

This year they have a vintage line up with Frank Weatherley and Evan Jones on reeds, Trummy Mayhew on trombone and euphonium, John Parker on guitar, Mike Hurrell on piano, Alan Arnold on double bass, and John Sutton on drums.

Leader Chris Strachan and star guest Paul Higgs will be on trumpets.

John Sutton is known as a champion of Twenties and Thirties jazz era and has featured on the soundtrack of the award-winning film adaptation of the Great Gatsby.

Proceeds from the performance will go towards a £700,000 project of restoration and refurbishment of the 1911 grade two star listed cinema to help secure its future.

There will also be a raffle on the evening to boost the overall sum for the appeal.

The mayor and mayoress of Harwich John and Carol Brown and Tendring council’s chairman Mark Platt will be guests at the event.
