HISTORY will be coming alive around Harwich to celebrate National Heritage Weekend.

The Harwich Society will be opening all of its historic attractions for visitors on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10.

The attractions include the Napoleonic Redoubt Fort with its spectacular views over historic Harwich and its harbour and Harwich’s Radar Tower.

Other attractions include the High Lighthouse, Lifeboat Museum, Maritime Museum, Ha’Penny Pier Visitor Centre, the Wheel Crane and Bobbit’s Hole Nature Reserve. They will all be open free of charge for visitors between 10am and 2pm on both days of the weekend.

Harwich Society co-ordinator for National Heritage Weekend, Chris Hillion, said: “This is a very special weekend for the teams of Harwich Society volunteers who are very proud of our town’s history and heritage and love the opportunity to show why Harwich deserves to be known as historic Harwich.”

Walking tours led by members of the Harwich Society’ Guide Panel will also leave the Ha’Penny Pier Visitor Centre at 2pm on both days and these free walking tours are a great way to soak up the atmosphere of the historic seaport and learn about its web of streets.

Harwich Society chairman, Colin Farnell, said: “The Harwich Society is very lucky to have so many dedicated volunteers who make it possible to offer so much to see and do on National Heritage Weekend.

“They are a credit to the Society and to our town and I’m sure that their efforts will make National Heritage Weekend a great success in historic Harwich.”
