A NAPOLEONIC fort will be opening its gates to residents to explore its history for the Bank Holiday.

The Harwich Society is once again opening up the Redoubt Fort for an open day with a range of activities on offer for all ages.

Among the attractions will be a tombola, refreshments, a bric-a-brac sale, bottle stalls and ice creams.

There will also be traditional games, including splat the rat, wheel of fortune and rol the penny.

Leader of the Society’s Redoubt Fort volunteers, Dan Beck, said: “The organisation of the annual Redoubt Fort open day involves a lot of hard work, but we have a great team of volunteers who love the opportunity to show this wonderful old building off to the public.

“With spectacular views, amazing history and lots of stalls and attractions the Redoubt Fort open day is a great event to visit.”

Harwich Society guides will be on hand to provide tours of the rooms containing historic exhibits and, of course, there will be the chance to enjoy the wonderful views over Harwich Harbour and historic Harwich.

“Anyone looking for somewhere to go on Bank Holiday Monday should look no further than Harwich’s Redoubt Fort,” added Mr Beck. “It’s a fun day out for all of the family in a truly spectacular setting.”

Entrance is free and doors open from 11am until 4pm on Monday, August 28.
