RESIDENTS young and old are invited to join with veterans to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele on Monday.

The service, which takes place at Clacton War Memorial on Marine Parade West, will be conducted by the Rev David Lower, with a reading by Tendring Council chairman Mark Platt.

The Clacton Branch of the Royal British Legion has joined forces with TDC to arrange the service, which begins at 11am.

The largest, best-known, and most costly in human suffering was the Third Battle of Ypres (July 31 to November 6, 1917, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele), in which the British, Canadian, ANZAC, and French forces recaptured the Passchendaele Ridge at a terrible cost of lives.

After months of fighting, this battle resulted in nearly half a million casualties to all sides.

During the course of the war the town was all but obliterated by the artillery fire.
