TRAVELLERS move on from a car park site after promising to just stay for a few days.

A Direction to Leave was issued to the new group of travellers this morning in Walton.

Six caravans and three other vehicles told Tendring Council staff yesterday they planned to stay for a day or two at a site close to the Columbine Centre and Walton-on-the-Naze Lifestyles.

The group arrived last weekend on a pay and display section of the car park.

It is the third time this has happened since the Easter weekend.

Paul Honeywood, Tendring councillor responsible for housing, said: "Staff attended the site as soon as we were informed of the group’s arrival and then reported the matter to the Essex Countywide Traveller Unit (ECTU) who take over from there.

“We liaised with them along the way as each and every step was taken to remove the travellers from the council-owned land.”

A Direction to Leave notice gives groups 24 hours to move on.

If they refuse, the ECTU looks to instigate court proceedings to have travellers evicted.

The whole process takes between seven and ten days.
