A TRUNK road to Harwich has been branded one of the worst in Essex with dangerous potholes littering the route.

The A120 between Ramsey and Horsley Cross was set to be resurfaced in January.

But the work was scrapped due to poor weather and no date has yet been set for it to be carried out.

Furious Harwich town and Essex County councillor Ivan Henderson has branded the road as a danger to motorists and blasted Highways England for failing to fix it.

He said: “They put signs up saying work will commence in Jan 9 but nothing happened.

“I’ve had lots of people come to me they aren’t happy the work hasn’t started.

“There are all these signs left up, it’s ridiculous.

“I’m not being funny but people are having to swerve around the holes, you can’t fail to hit one.

“I’m surprised no-one on a motorbike has had a serious injury because one part of the road must have a three inch wide groove down the road - if your wheel got caught in that there would be a crash.

“Even January was well overdue for these works to be done. They have let that road deteriorate – it must be one of the worst roads in Essex.”

Mr Henderson contacted Kier Highways, maintenance contractors for the road, to ask for a date for work to start but was told other roadworks including resurfacing the A120 from Marks Tey to Braintree, were taking priority.

Mr Henderson said: “For them to say they don’t know when it will be done, I don’t think it’s good enough.

“Harwich Town Council has agreed to write to the Secretary of State for transport and ask them to intervene with Highways England on this.

“Something has got to be done, this is really dangerous and it’s doing untold damage to vehicles and those people are paying their road tax.

“If your car is whacking potholes all the time you are going to get problems with wheel alignment and then tyre wear. This road is used by vehicles at an international portand visitors coming to the area - it’s not good enough.”

Mr Henderson said the worst part of the road is between the first Wix turn-off to Harwich Road, Wix and the Horsley Cross roundabout.

A spokesman for Highways England said it is expected that resurfacing work will be carried out on the road in the autumn as part of a larger scheme of works in the region.

More information is set to be announced at a later date.
