FRINTON Golf Club junior captain Claire Vaughan won the Fiona Edmund Trophy - a 36-hole scratch competition - to become lady club champion for 2017.

Her score over the two rounds was 180.

It was a hard-fought match and Caroline Gard and Marie Ellis were a close second and third, with scores of 181 and 182 respectively.

On Friday, 120 members paid tribute to Michael Gates, who is leaving the club after 15 years.

A five-man Texas scramble raised significant funds for his charity, Headway.

The overall winners were Chris Hemingway, Mike Leonardi, Toby Oliver, Rob Long and Bob Newton, with an amazing score of 51 nett.

They made 14 birdies.

In second place, and also the winners of the best mixed team, were Lily Taylor, Barbara Thorpe, Frank Thorpe, Stephan Vaughan and Chris Taylor. They had 54.2 nett.

The best all-ladies' team was made up of lady captain Marilyn Clarke, past captain Angela Vaughan, Margaret Dean, Diane Gerrard and Claire Vaughan.

The men vied for the Cooper Cup on Sunday - an 18-hole stableford with a maximum handicap limit of 24.

David Partridge was the winner on countback with a fabulous score of 44 points, just ahead of Rob Trotman.

Mitch McAuley was third with 42 points.

All three had their handicaps promptly reduced.
