FRINTON Cricket Club skipper Kyran Young was given the ultimate pre-match boost after discovering his mum had made a surprise trip … from Australia.

Unbeknown to her son, mum Debbie flew into Gatwick and arrived late on Friday night to watch Frinton’s home match against Horsford, on Saturday.

However, what made her marathon trip even more remarkable was the fact she then flew back to Perth on Sunday lunchtime, arriving home on Monday night.

“This was going to be the first season when I wasn’t going to see Kyran play,” said Debbie.

“He’s been doing so well and my heart was breaking not being able to see him.

“I was a bit upset so my husband said ‘we can’t have that’.

“We decided that if we flew out on the Thursday and landed on the Friday night, we could watch the game, fly out first thing on Sunday morning and then be back home in Perth by Monday night.

“So we flew around the world to watch one day of cricket!”

Debbie made the trip with husband Rob and reckoned they spent 56 hours travelling – including stops in Dubai - compared to 36 hours on English soil.

The couple stayed in Harwich during their whistle-stop tour of north Essex.

“When we arrived at the ground on Saturday morning there was a storm happening,” she said.

“We had talked about that possibility and always knew games being rained off was part of English cricket.

“But even if the match had been called off, it wouldn’t have been a wasted journey.

“Had that happened, we would have found a bar or restaurant and spent the day chatting with Kyran.”

Debbie and Rob saw Frinton draw with Horsford, with Young scoring 94.

They had been to Frinton before, in addition to visiting Young’s former club Mistley.

“It’s so stunningly beautiful here and it’s a lovely place to watch cricket,” she said.

“It’s also been lovely to be here for the opening of the new facilities and learning a bit of history about the club.

“Frinton are a very friendly, welcoming club and it’s certainly his extended family here. He’s so well looked after here.”
