A MAN is fighting for his life following a crash on Canvey.

The motorist, believed to be in his 60s, is thought to have suffered a cardiac arrest at the wheel in Central Wall Road and careered into a garden fence.

Witnesses to the incident rushed to help the stricken driver.

Laurie Woolcott, who saw the incident, said: “He was driving past on the opposite side of the road, and had a seizure or heart attack.

“He collapsed at the wheel and veered across the road into a concrete fence post .”

Mr Woolcott added: “One of the drivers of the following cars was out giving him CPR. They had pulled him from his car.

“I understand from the police and ambulance team that his heart had stopped, and he was taken by ambulance to hospital, but he wasn’t breathing.”

Resident Emma Symon said residents had called for a barrier to be put up to protect homes in the narrow road.

She said: “We need a barrier here. He went into my elderly neighbour’s front garden. It’s a narrow road with a blind bend. It’s a narrow path and people need to be protected with a barrier but we’ve been told the most we could get would be a higher kerb.”

Ms Symon added: “The paramedics were working on the poor driver for about 20 minutes. They said he’d had a heart attack.

“There were so many police and paramedics here.”

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “The incident was reported at 2.38pm. A man was found to be not breathing and in cardiac arrest.

“We sent two ambulance crews, two response cars and the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

“A man in his 60s was taken by land ambulance to Basildon Hospital in a critical condition.”
