TWO hundred runners are expected to pound the pavements at this year’s Frinton and Walton Fun Run and Half Marathon.

With just a few days left until the big event this Sunday, 150 people have signed up to take part in the coastal run, which heads along Frinton’s promenade to the Naze Tower.

Chris Opperman, of Frinton Rotary Club, which has resurrected the popular two-mile fun run, said the event’s popularity has been a surprise.

He said: “There are other runs taking place around the same time and we also entered the marathon field quite late, so we’re very pleased.

“The reaction to the course has been great, which is encouraging. Not many marathons involve taking in the North Sea and that’s really attracted some interest, and the fact both races end on the meadow near the cricket club.

“There’s a match happening on the same day so the atmosphere will be buzzing. We’re ploughing on, encouraged and excited.”

Registration on the day has been brought forward to 8.30am in case of a last-minute rush of families.

More volunteers are also being urged to help with tasks, such as time keeping.

Mr Opperman said: “It’s all very well having the much appreciated professional runners, but to have an armada of kids roaring down the streets with smiles on their faces is great fun.

“People have been very generous with sponsorship and for a giggle, someone has even sponsored the safety pins. People have been marvellous – local firms in particular.”

Both events start at 10.30am. Runners must be 17 or over to take part in the half marathon.
