NEARLY 200 angry residents have signed in petition to protest against parking restitutions which have been introduced along 13 island roads.

The Echo revealed last week letters had been sent out by the South Essex Parking Partnership (SEPP) informing residents that yellow lines would be painted. Parking will be banned between 9am and 8pm in May Avenue, Maurice Road, Lottem Road, Margraten Avenue, Shellbeach Road, Keer Avenue, Weel Road, Gafzelle Drive, Station Road, Seaview Road, Hellendoorn Road, Whiteways and Marine Avenue.

Residents have claimed they were not made aware of a Castle Point Council meeting where the restrictions were discussed.

Teresa Swann, 52, of Seaview Road, has now started up a petition in protest against the plans, which are due to come into place on Monday, June 5 and are designed to stop visitors blocking up the busy roads.

She said: “I am hoping to get as many signatures as I can and will print it off and deliver it to MP Rebecca Harris.

“I only set it up over the weekend and it has almost 200 signatures already. I’m glad there has been so much support. There are so many people who will be affected if they cannot park their cars on the road.

“Some people have been saying it would be a good idea on Facebook, but they are probably people who have the space on their drives. Most people I have spoken to are quite annoyed.”

Castle Point councillor for Canvey East, Chas Mumford, is calling for parking permits for residents

He said: “About 200 letters about the plans were sent out to residents and there were about 100 responses, with pretty much half for and half against.

“I am trying to persuade the council to have another look at it and at the possibilities of bringing in a residents parking permit. I can understand the frustration so I am talking to the council to try and get a satisfying resolution.”

SEPP did not respond to requests for a comment before the Echo went to print.
