FOOTBALL fans faced long queues getting home after the match between Southend United and Bolton as a busy road was closed.
The A127 at Progress Road was shut for work to upgrade the cameras. Frustrated fans took to social media to express their irritation. Mark Wallis tweeted: “Home at 11:35pm from Roots Hall. By a distance a new record. I live 22 miles from the ground. A127 closed for roadworks on a match night.”
Adrian Clarke tweeted: “Whose bright idea was it to close the A127 at 10pm on the night of a big Southend game? Diabolical.”
Jimmy Shrimp added: “Stuck on A127 going nowhere.”
An Essex Highways spokesperson said: “We are sorry to hear some drivers experienced delays on and around the A127 in Southend on Tuesday night.
"The A127 was closed in one direction to allow upgrade work to the safety cameras there.
"We always attempt to schedule highways improvements when the least traffic is on the road, but unfortunately these vital works had to be coordinated around other projects.”
