DOCTORS' orders have become last order after two high-flying surgeons have become the new landlords of a run-down pub in Jaywick.

Shukri Shami and Eva Stibe have spent a small fortune renovating the Never Say Die on Broadway after buying the boozer last year.

The husband and wife team, from Ongar, had never pulled a pint before - and Shukri doesn't even drink.

But they decided to take on the pub after falling love with Jaywick and its beaches.

The couple were first drawn to the Sunshine Coast 16 years ago after reading that it was possible to buy property in Jaywick for just £10,000.

"We ended up buying a place in Point Clear Bay which we used for many happy years," said Eva.

But their family started to outgrow their holiday home so they started looking for somewhere bigger.

Eva said: "The place in Point Clear Bay wasn't large enough and then we saw Benefits By The Sea and that reminded us of Jaywick.

"We looked online and this completely decrepit, uninhabitable property was available wt the end of the same road as the pub so we bought that and did it up.

"Then we discovered the pub was up for grabs. Soon after that it stopped running and was boarded up so we made inquiries and decided it was quite reasonable for the amount of property you were getting."

They bought the pub and spend six months doing it up.

"We've completely modernised the front half and updated the bar, and turned the back into a holiday let which is almost ready to be up and running," said Eva.

The couple, who have a 14-year-old daughter and twins Artur and Mika, aged four, are also renovating another property which they could turn into a beachfront restaurant.

"We come down a couple of times a week to see what's going on," said Eva.

"We're not serving behind the bar but we've got a manager in the pub and we are getting involved employing people.

"The beach by the Never Say Die is particularly gorgeous. It's a white sandy beach and perfect for swimming, with amazing sunsets.

"The children love it here and there is a regular collection of kids that come and play with them.

"They like walking on the beach and paddling."

She says Benefits By The Sea only highlighted the negative side of the community.

Meanwhile other high-fliers are also discovering Jaywick.

"We know a couple of guys who live in London and have a place here," said Eva.

"They love it because of the beautiful, peaceful seafront. Weekdays they live in the Barbican and then they go from the very trendy and very exclusive to the beautiful coast."
