MEASURES are being put in place to protect poultry from a new strain of Avian Flu.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and Animal and Plant Health Agency has declared an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone across England for 30 days.

Keepers of poultry and other captive birds are now required to keep them indoors - or take appropriate steps to keep them separate from wild birds.

Anne Brown, county councillor responsible for Essex Trading Standards, said: “Although no cases of Avian Flu have yet been found in the UK, the risk of infection to our poultry livestock is real and the consequences would be severe.

“We urge you to adhere to the prevention measures while maintaining animal welfare at all times.”
