AFTER featuring in several books about Brexit, Clacton MP Douglas Carswell has penned his own work.

But rather than tackling the issue of Europe, Mr Carswell has issued a rallying cry for people to take power for themselves, rather than have it grabbed from them.

In Rebel: How to Overthrow the Emerging Oligarchy, the Ukip MP argues politics has become a cartel, run in the interests of insiders and the economy is rigged in the interests of a few.

He said: “When I was first stood for Clacton, I thought to fix the country you just needed the right people in office.

"Now, I think we need radical change.

“They have rigged the system, they have rigged democracy and they have rigged the economy.

“If we want our children to have a better life than we have we need to overthrow the oligarchy.”

The MP said the oligarchy includes the established parties who have “gamed the electoral system” to their advantage, vested interests who ensure councils approve large developments, big banks and utilities who make massive profits regardless of customer service.

He complains constituents are "getting into trouble over a few hundred quid" owed in tax credits, while bank bailouts and printing money through quantitative easing creates a “welfare system for banks”.

The politician says the BBC is also part of the oligarchy with people forced to fund it through the licence fee, while privately owned media struggle.

“It’s not the free market anymore,” Mr Carswell complained.

“We are seeing around the world new insurgent parties. Our democracy is being stolen by the elite and the people want it back.”

He also complained of two countries, with people of “common sense” in his constituency, compared to a Westminster featuring a “commentariat of politicians and pundits who have a sneering contempt for ordinary England”.

In his book, the MP demands political reform, including giving electorates the power to recall their MPs, an end to banking bail-outs, and giving people more power over matters like how they may better spend the £8,000 Essex County Council “misspends” on a child’s education.

Largely written over the summer, the book is due to be published next April.
