ROAD safety campaigners are calling for action to combat speeding drivers before someone is killed.

Jaywick councillor Kevin Watson claims drivers have been seen doing almost double the speed limit.

“It can get pretty bad, especially with motorbikes and cars along the Broadway,” he said.

“It’s only a 30mph speed limit there, but they are doing 40, 50 and maybe even faster.

“They are going really fast.”

Mr Watson says residents have complained about speeding vehicles.

“It’s all along the Broadway, Golf Green Way and Meadow Way,” he said.

Mr Watson now hopes to launch a Speedwatch group to catch rogue drivers. Volunteers will be trained to use speed guns by the police and then go out on patrol.

“It’s been an ongoing problem for a long time,” said Mr Watson.

“But just showing a presence might slow them down and hopefully they will get the message before someone gets killed.

“I’ve been in touch with the police who are doing the training and we are hoping to get it up and running in the New Year so I need some volunteers by then. The more we can get, the better.”
