AMBITIOUS plans for up to 200 homes and a retail park on the outskirts of Clacton have been given the green light.

Tendring Council last night approved the multi-million pound Brook Park West scheme - on farmland opposite Brook Retail Park.

The proposals include a new Lidl supermarket, Marstons pub restaurant and hotel, drive-through McDonald's and Costa Coffee outlets and a Wickes DIY store.

Lidl has confirmed its town centre store will remain open.

The Pickers Ditch walkway along the site's southern boundary will also be expanded.

The rival Clacton Factory Outlet had objected to the proposals.

Tesco - which has an out of town store on the opposite side of the A133 - also expressed concerns.

There were also fears the new development could have an impact on plans to expand Waterglade retail park in Clacton town centre.

The council's planning committee unanimously approved the proposals.

The new retail park and homes will be accessed by a new road off the Brook Park roundabout.
