Clacton MP Douglas Carswell was booed, hissed and heckled in parliament yesterday (wed) as he called for a “Post-EU national consensus.”

The abuse came during Prime Minister’s Question Time when the UKIP MP made a conciliatory gesture to members who support Britain’s continued membership of the European Union.

It also led speaker John Bercow to intervene.

Mr Carswell thanked Prime Minister David Cameron for allowing the Referendum, but as Mr Carswell called for consensus, one MP responded:”No!”

While the EU referendum was "a great exercise in democracy, we should recognise that although we won, it was a narrow mandate with plenty of decent, patriotic people voting for remain,” he said.

Mr Carswell also said he was keen to see "close links with our friends and allies in Europe".

Prime Minister David Cameron responded: “It’s time for people in our country to come together.”

Afterwards, the UKIP MP accused parliament of a “mob mindset” and said “clearly many MPs are now looking to prevent Brexit.”

“I see trouble ahead. Going to get very ugly”, he tweeted.

Mr Carswell also said: “The longer I sit in the Commons chamber the less confidence I have in our political system.

“Many MPs in Commons belittling ref outcome. Clearly many MPs now looking to prevent Brexit. I see trouble ahead. Going to get v ugly.”

“Perhaps the most shocking thing about being booed / jeered by MPs is that 1-on-1 in corridors none has dared behave that way. Mob mindset.”

“My question was about need for decency to reach out to Remainers. MPs responded with hissing and booing as I did. This is the SW1 elite,” he also tweeted.

Political journalists watching the event seemed appalled.

“God people booing Douglas Carswell- not sure that’s very sensible,” tweeted Anushka Asthana, political editor of the Guardian.

Political sketch writer Quentin Letts commented: “The booing of Douglas Carswell by Lab, SNP and maybe a few Tory MPs at Pmqs was a low moment.”

“Many blame his defection for the referendum promise in the 1st place,” explained Chris Ship of ITV News.

Mr Carswell told the Gazette afterwards: “I have never in my ten years as an MP seen or heard anything like it.

“There was real nastiness, a wall of nastiness. I couldn’t care less about people being unkind to me but what does trouble me is that is shows career politicians trying to undermine the referendum result.”

“I was booed and hissed and jeered because I represent the Referendum result and they hate it. I was elected by people in Clacton who want to leave. I am not backing down,” he added.
