TENDRING’S council tax benefit scheme will remain unchanged next year.
It means that working age claimants on low incomes will continue to receive a maximum 80 per cent award - and pay 20 per cent of their overall bill.
Tendring Council was forced to introduce its own Local Council Tax Support scheme after the Government abolished its own council tax benefits in 2013.
Council leader Neil Stock said: “I think that you will find that our scheme is one of the most generous in Essex.
“We didn’t want to have to take this on but we are making the best job we can of it.
“We have had very few complaints and it is actually working quite well.”
Pensioners will continue to be eligible for up to 100 per cent discount.
Labour councillor Garry Calver said: “We were emphatically opposed to this scheme.
“The manner in which it is being implemented means that the only people paying more council tax in the Tendring district are those least able to afford it.”
