Hundreds of people had previously lined the route of the parade which began outside Clacton Town Hall and marched to the seafront gardens led by the Colchester Scout Band and five members of 3 Parachute Regiment from Colchester Garrison.

Jamie Robinson, chairman of Clacton Royal British Legion, was parade marshal.

Tendring Council chairman Fred Nicholls, vice-chairman Jayne Chapman, corporate director Martyn Knappett and Clacton Royal British Legion president Dan Casey took the salute outside the town hall.

The Rev David Lower of St Paul’s Church, led the service at the Memorial Gardens where a large number of wreaths were laid around the war memorial.

Mr Casey said it was a very moving occasion for old and young alike.

“It is always good to have so many residents support the parade and service and I was astounded to see so many youngsters there alongside us older ones," he said.

"It truly makes it a very memorable day.”
