BIG-HEARTED musicians put on a special show for a fan with incurable cancer in his own front room.

David Ross, 66, of Great Bentley, was unable to go to see the Roman River Music group in concert after being diagnosed with lung cancer last month.

So they came to him and played an exclusive concert.

Artistic director Orlando Jopling said: “I realised there are some people who cannot get to our concerts and we wanted to make a gesture of going to play in someone’s house.

“We want everybody to be able to enjoy the music.”

The classical music lover’s name was pulled out of a hat to win the surprise.

Mr Jopling added: “David is an exceptional person, he was very moved and overwhelmed and was the most delightful host. We played two pieces for him and then had a tea party.

“It was very moving and worthwhile for the musicians as it is such a tragic story, which he has taken with the most incredibly positive attitude.”

Mr Ross, a former probation officer, said the concert had been fantastic.

“I have had amazing support from family, friends and former colleagues and I just want to make the most out of the time I have left with them,” he said.

“The concert was absolutely wonderful. They were really nice people and everyone really enjoyed it.”

Ruth Wiley, who nominated Mr Ross, said he deserved the surprise.

“He is just one of life’s good guys and he is a lovely man,” she said. “David recently retired when he found out he had cancer, but his attitude is not angry or bitter or twisted, and I think that is utterly amazing.”
