VETERANS turned out in force for a special event to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Almost 50 veterans were presented with medals, which had been made especially for the event at Clacton’s Princes Theatre last week.

Veterans met up with old colleagues to share stories and experiences and also enjoyed a buffet and a dance.

The event, hosted by Tendring Council and the Royal British Legion, saw the theatre plunged into darkness for a recording of Winston Churchill’s famous victory speech.

It was all staged to celebrate the 70th anniversary of VE Day. Council chairman Fred Nicholls and Brigadier Malcolm Ratcliffe, president of the Essex Royal British Legion, welcomed the guests.

Mr Nicholls said: “It was great to see all the veterans coming together to have a great time. It was also a chance for us to show them that we care about them and thank them all for their war efforts.”

Jamie Robinson, branch chairman and parade marshal for Clacton RBL, said it was a way of marking an important day in the country’s history.

He said: “I know from the feedback we got that all those who attended enjoyed the whole event and they thanked those who had put it on.

“It was a special occasion for them to remember and a time to share experiences with others who had gone through the same war days.”
