A POLICE investigation was launched after an elderly resident was found dead in the grounds of a care home.

The resident is believed to have wandered out of the Silversprings Care Home in Tenpenny Hill, Thorrington. Her body was found at about 6.45am yesterday.

A police spokesman said: "Police have launched an investigation into the death of an elderly woman.

"Officers were called on Monday after a body was found in the grounds of a care home in Tenpenny Hill, Thorrington.

"Staff from the care home found the woman, who is aged in her 90s, and called police.

"The death is being treated as unexplained and investigations are continuing."

A post mortem examination is being carried out to determine the cause of death.

The area where the woman's body was found was cordoned off and a tent was put up about 30ft from the main building to protect the scene while forensic experts tried to find out what happened.

Police remained at the scene throughout the day with the cordon in place.
