CONTROVERSIAL proposals to spend £160,000 on switching the district’s streetlights back on go before Tendring Council bosses tomorrow.

Most streetlights across Tendring are turned off between midnight and 5am as part of a cash-saving scheme introduced by Essex County Council last year.

But a consultation was launched after Tendring Council put £160,000 aside to pay for streetlighting, pending a consultation with residents and emergency services.

Just over 200 residents called for the streetlights to be switched back on, citing crime, health and safety as the main reasons.

Almost 70 people said they were happy for the lights to remain off.

Councillors will discuss the matter at a cabinet meeting, but the final decision will be made by the full council on March 24.
