CLACTON Coastguard teams joined a rescue effort after a woman fell into a river and got stuck in the muddy banks.

The woman, thought to be a student at Essex University, tumbled into the mud at Colchester Hythe at about 3am on Monday.

She was rescued after her screams for help were heard by people in nearby houseboats.

Clacton’s Coastguard Rescue teams arrived to join the effort and made sure the woman had been recovered safely.

The crews also searched the surrounding banks to make sure there were no other casualties.

It is understood the woman was suffering from hypothermia when she was released from the mud and was taken to Colchester General Hospital.
