FEARFUL residents want a speed camera installed in Walton to stop speedsters tearing through the town at night.

Campaigners claim some drivers have taken to using the town as a racetrack after dark.

They said the racers had become a persistent problem, making it difficult for pedestrians to get across the roads safely.

Jo Martin, of Walton Community Project, said: “The town centre makes up a little circuit and people tear around here. It’s like a little racetrack for some of them.

“They do it along the seafront, too. As soon as the road opens up, they put their foot down, and it has become a real problem."

Walton Community Project started a petition to build support for safety measures to be put in place to put an end to speeding.

Mrs Martin added: “People are really getting behind this. I don’t know how effective it will be, but we can only try. The best way to do that might be to show how big an issue this is to us.”

The petition can be signed at the Walton Community Project office, in the town’s High Street.
