A TRIBUTE has been released for a pensioner who died after a fatal crash in Kirby Cross.

Charles Mayes, 95, was killed in a collision between his car and a tipper truck in Frinton Road on Friday night.

Mr Mayes spent six years in the RAF and won medals for his military service, before becoming a salesman.

Known as Chas or Charlie to his friends, Mr Mayes moved to Kirby Cross 20 years ago with his wife Irene.

He leaves behind two children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

His family have paid tribute to him following the tragic incident.

The family said: “Chas was a very much loved father, grandfather and great grandfather who was thought the world of.

“He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.”

A 46-year-old man from Dagenham was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop and driving while unfit through drink or drugs following the incident.

He has been released on bail while police investigate until March 13.

Anyone with information on the crash should call 101.
