CRIME prevention officers have sent out a winter warning, urging homeowners to protect their property over the festive season.
Police are giving out advice in a bid to stop residents becoming victims.
Clacton-based officer David Gillies said: “As the darker evenings draw in, burglars are on the prowl for valuables and cash.
“They recognise that homes tend to be getting ready for seasonal celebrations and may have gifts lying around the house or on display.
“If you leave your home in complete darkness and your curtains are not drawn, and no car is on the drive, it’s an obvious sign to an opportunist burglar that no-one is in.
“At this time of the year more than any other, it pays to secure your home.”
Top tips include putting lights, a TV or radio on a timer to give the impression someone is home.
People can also also register valuables for free at immobilise.com which can help recover stolen goods and trace the crooks.
