GREEN Party deputy leader Dr Shahrar Ali was in Clacton to campaign alongside by-election candidate Chris Southall at the weekend.

Tendring Green Party members greeted Dr Ali before hitting the streets with Mr Southall to talk to voters.

Mr Southall, who lives in an “eco-house” in Burrs Road, said Greens across the country were fighting for workers’ and family rights which could be lost if the UK leaves the European Union.

He has also called for a minimum wage which people can afford to live on.

Mr Southall said a number of people wanted to talk about the lack of doctors in the local GP surgeries and the “terrible” experiences of some people who have had their disability benefit reassessed.

“Greens will never attack the neediest in our country in order to save money while the most wealthy see their income grow by leaps and bounds,”

he said.

Dr Ali added: “The people of Clacton have been granted a terrific opportunity in Chris Southall and I am proud to be campaigning alongside him.

“The Green Party offers a positive vision for society well beyond the next electoral cycle.

“We will replace the shock and awe tactics of government austerity with investment in Green jobs and public services that deliver a better deal for all.”
