FIVE candidates will fight it out for the county council seat left vacant following the resignation of Ukip’s Roger Lord.

Mr Lord, who represented the Europsceptic party on Essex County Council, resigned after he was unceremoniously dumped in favour of Tory defector Douglas Carswell.

The county councillor for Brightlingsea had been selected by the local Ukip association to stand for them at the General Election next year.

But he was ousted in favour of Mr Carswell, who was selected by Ukip’s national executive committee to fight the Clacton by-election triggered by his own resignation.

The candidates for the Brightlingsea division are Carol Carlsson Browne (Labour), Alan Goggin (Conservative), Beverley Ann Maltby (Green), Anne Poonian (Ukip) and Gary Scott (Lib Dem).

The election, which will be held on the same day as the Parliamentary by-election, will take place on October 9.
