THEATRE organisers hope to unearth a doggy superstar to take on a top role alongside a TV legend.

Frinton Summer Theatre bosses are looking for the next Lassie to appear in the final play of the season – called The Dog – which will be staged from August 19-23.

A special casting session has been set up to find the right pooch to take the stage.

It is open to all dog owners across the area, though the casting director is specifically searching for a female dog. The chosen pet will have the chance to upstage leading man and One Foot in the Grave star Richard Wilson – the biggest name on the summer theatre bill this season.

Producers have a list of requirements for the ideal hound, but want to see as many as possible at the canine casting call.

Co-producer Clive Brill said: “We are only looking for female dogs and we need them to be of a certain size so that audiences at the back can see them on stage.

"They need to be friendly, docile and biddable as they will have to endure hours of petting and attention. If you think your pet would fit the bill then we’d love to meet them.”

The audition for the hopeful hounds run from 9am to 10.30am on August 9.

Two or three finalists will be picked to return for a final audition the next day.

Richard Wilson will be at the final hurdle to meet the dogs and help producers decide on a winner.

Dog needs to be available for rehearsals and the show from August 11-23.
