BRIGHTLINGSEA shoppers have been given a brief stay of execution before they are left with only one town centre bank branch.

NatWest, in Victoria Place, had been due to close last week, but will now remain open until September.

The town’s Barclays branch, in High Street, will also shut in the same month, leaving Lloyds as Brightlingsea’s only remaining bank.

NatWest revealed it was closing the branch because it was being used by only 41 customers per week.

An agreement had been made for customers to be able to withdraw cash, check balances and pay bills free of charge at the town’s post office.

But NatWest has delayed its closure date because the post office, also in Victoria Place, is not yet ready to receive customers.

Barclays also blamed a reduction in usage for its decision to close on September 12.

A NatWest spokesman said: “The branch closure has been delayed until September 17.

“The decision was taken to ensure the post office services are up and running before the closure.”
