A PARADE will be held in Clacton next to mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War.

The Royal British Legion and the Royal Air Force Association have joined up with Tendring Council for the commemoration, which takes place on August 3.

The parade will start from outside Clacton Town Hall at 10.30am and march to the war memorial on Marine Parade West where a service takes place at 11am.

It will include a roll call of those named on the war memorial who died in 1914.

Council vice-chairman Fred Nicholls, who is attending the parade and service, said: β€œIt is going to be a very emotional and poignant occasion and I am proud and honoured to be taking part.

β€œI anticipate that there will be a large turn-out from residents across Tendring.”

There will also be a display in the Town Hall reception running from July 28 to August 8 featuring background to the First World War and stories and documents relating to local residents.

People in Tendring can also take part in a national Lights Out event, by leaving on just a single light or candle in their homes from 10pm to 11pm on August 4.

The Clacton branch of the Royal British Legion is holding a candle-lit vigil at the war memorial on August 4 from 9pm and 9.30pm.
