VOLUNTEER founders of Tendring Neighbourhood Watch have been celebrated for their tireless work in helping to keep the community safe.

The annual Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network awards were held in London on June 20.

Margaret and Mike Vaughan-Chatfield, from the Tendring branch, were named as finalists for the innovation award at the glittering ceremony.

They were nominated for creating a 24/7 call centre, allowing residents to call them if they need help at all times.

Following the scheme’s success in Tendring, other areas across the country are looking to replicate the 24-hour service.

Tendring Neighbourhood Watch chairman Mike said: “We were nominated for our work here and eventually finished as runners up. It’s a pleasure to be recognised.

“But most of all we are pleased for the members and the community here.

“With the police cuts and the number of serious incidents we have seen in the area, it has never been more important for us to work together."
