A BANK will be closing its Brightlingsea branch, just months after it denied it had any plans to do so.

Barclays, in Brightlingsea High Street, will be closing on September 12.

The closure will leave the town with only one bank - Lloyds in Victoria Place.

Last month Natwest announced it will close its Victoria Place branch on July 25.

In January, Barclays assured residents it had “no plans” to close the branch and insisted it was recruiting extra staff.

Bob Shotton, of the Brightlingsea Business Association, said: “Lots of people come in from surrounding villages to use the bank, and obviously they will also use the shops and facilities.

“As an association we have worked hard to get all the shops filled against the odds, but without the banks I fear it will have an impact on the town centre.”
