UNPROFITABLE bus services may be scrapped as Essex County Council seeks to cut costs.

The council has launched a public consultation on six routes, including the 85 and 86 between Brightlingsea and Mistley, which runs on Wednesdays.

On average, the services under consultation cost the council £8.29 per passenger to provide.

Other routes under threat include the 383, which serves Rickstones School in Witham.

The current contracts for the routes expire on August 30.
