MORE than 400 homes have signed up to a new garden waste collection scheme in Tendring.

The two-year pilot project is initially being rolled out in the Clacton, Frinton and Walton areas.

The first collections will take place in Clacton on the week beginning May 19 and on May 27 in Frinton, Walton and Kirby areas.

The pilot project will see 25 fortnightly collections per year and garden rubbish will be collected from wheelie bins.

The scheme sees an initial one-off charge of £25 – which includes the delivery of a wheelie bin - along with a £50 annual subscription.

The pilot will cover only residential properties and a review will be carried out after six months to see how the initiative is progressing.

Mr Turner said the overall aim is to increase Tendring’s recycling tonnage and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
