WALTON has been described as a town in limbo with work still yet to start on a controversial superstore development.

Retail giant Tesco was given full planning permission to create a new supermarket, petrol station and car park on land at the front of Martello Caravan Park.

Permission was granted by Tendring Council 18 months ago and it was originally suggested work on the development could start in March 2014.

But there is still no sign of work getting underway at the site.

Walton councillor Alec Moss said: “Walton needs something to happen and we want a supermarket.

“We are not happy at all. The future of Walton revolves around this development going ahead. We are a town in limbo.”

The conditions of planning approval being granted gave Tesco five years to start work. The company has until October 2017 to begin development.

If no work has started by that point Tesco would have to apply for planning permission again.

A Tesco spokesman said: “We’re committed to building a new store for the community. We are still considering timelines for the works and we will make sure we keep the local community updated.”
