A silver Ford Mondeo crashed into a stationary Mercedes E350 and a beige Toyota Yaris, just before 11am.
It happened in Queen Street, just off Connaught Avenue, and a section of the road was blocked off after the incident for more than an hour.
The driver of the Mondeo was taken to Colchester General Hospital with a variety of minor injuries.
He is thought to have a pre-existing condition which contributed to the crash. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
A second crash caused major congestion in Kirby Cross at about 2.30pm.
Holland Road was closed completely after a car and motorcycle collided.
Traffic was backed up along Pork Lane while the scene was examined by officers.
